He was the main eventer that never was.

Kevin Owens was a revelation as NXT Champion. His psychopathic prize fighter character set NXT on fire and got a lot of people interested in the project for the first time.

When Owens came up to the main roster, he quickly made a name for himself there by capturing two Intercontinental Championships within his first nine months and quickly becoming a lot of people's favourite wrestler.

Owens reached the top of Raw's mountain when he won the vacant Universal Championship in a Fatal 4-Way Elimination Match on Raw in 2016. Owens outlasted Big Cass, Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins to pick up the big red belt, with more than a little help from Triple H, who turned on former protege, Rollins, to start the build to their WrestleMania match.

The long, long, long build.

Owens winning the belt felt like the start a new era in WWE, and it was really cool to see one of the independent scene's starlets win a World Championship in the biggest wrestling company in the world.

Then he lost the belt to Goldberg. Who'd have thought that was going to happen when the reign started?
