10 Best Booked WWE Champions Of 2020
9. Braun Strowman (WWE Smackdown Universal Championship)
There will always be a place in wrestling for good old-fashioned hokum, and Bray Wyatt's war against Braun Strowman provided plenty of it.
Bray Wyatt played an excellent Sinestro to Strowman's Hal Jordan as he attempted to convince his former protege to join forces once again, and their match at Money in the Bank told a good story as Strowman duped his former patriarch en route to retaining the title (in a much-appreciated but increasingly rare moment of a WWE babyface outwitting a heel).
This led to the utterly barking 'Swamp Fight' at Extreme Rules which was, admittedly, not either man's finest hour, but the aftermath did lead to one of 2020's best storylines as the Fiend went after Alexa Bliss in an attempt to hurt Strowman. This sent the big man off the deep end and started a chain of events that led to Bliss' current role as the Fiend's twisted disciple, a character that has fit the horror movie-loving Alexa like a glove made of human skin.
Strowman's run as Universal Champion won't be looked back on as one of the great championship reigns, but given that he was never meant to hold the belt in the first place WWE did well in booking a story that fit him and his history with the company. The fact it also led to one of the year's most intriguing character reinventions and was capped off by the return of Roman Reigns at his ass-kicking best means that Strowman's time as placeholder champion was, ultimately, a success. A qualified one, to be sure, (what was that feud with Miz and Morrison about?) but a success nonetheless.
