5. Batista Vs. Triple H (WrestleMania 21)
In mid-2004, the plan was for a babyface Randy Orton to headline WrestleMania 21 against Triple H but Orton just wasn't working as a good guy, so WWE had to change the course and go with the man that every week was getting huge reactions - Batista. The Animal was in Evolution with HHH but any hint of friction between the two would send the crowd into a frenzy, so WWE concocted a three month story that is one of the best in modern day WWE. Batista won the Royal Rumble automatically getting a shot at either JBL's WWE title or Triple H's World Title. As the weeks progressed, Triple H was casually pointing Batista towards JBL until an episode of RAW where Triple H and Ric Flair were talking about how stupid Batista was to fall for their plan to get him to challenge Bradshaw. The camera then zoomed out and right outside the door was (can you believe it?) Batista, who'd heard the whole bloody thing. That night in the ring, Dave picked up the SmackDown contract to face JBL and, as all of Evolution were giving each other the thumbs up, The Animal turned his thumb down and powebombed Triple H through the table and signed the RAW contract to main event WrestleMania against his mentor, The Game. The audience organically got behind Batista and each week they wanted him to turn more and more and when he did, there was a huge ovation. They'd go on to have a superb 'Mania main event where Batista lifted the World Heavyweight Championship, but it's doubtful that The Animal would have been ready for it if the build hadn't been so good (yet so, so simple).
