10 Best Champion Vs. Champion Matches In WWE History
9. John Cena (WWE And World Tag Team) Vs. Shawn Michaels (World Tag Team)
WrestleMania 23 doesn't get a great deal of love, despite having one of the most unique main events in the show's history.
The night that saw Vince McMahon shaved bald by the current President of the United States also saw John Cena defend his WWE Championship against his tag team partner, Shawn Michaels. Not only were they tag team partners, but they were tag team champions too.
The babyface pair had defeated Edge & Randy Orton for the belts on an episode of Raw. Part of the build to this match included Orton playing a video package highlighting how Michaels had turned on a majority of his tag team partners across his career.
Despite Michaels promising otherwise, Cena was added to this list when HBK superkicked the champ during a tag team match against The Undertaker and Batista. It wasn't a heel turn from Michaels, but it was enough to add another layer of intrigue to WrestleMania's main event.
The match itself was great, easily Cena's best to date. He retained the gold by forcing Michaels to submit to the STFU. The quality of the match, combined with its place in the main event of WrestleMania, is what lands it on this list.
Oh, by the way, Michaels turned heel on Cena the next night on Raw. I guess Randy was right.
