Not only did Extreme Rules 2011 top lackluster WrestleMania 27, but it blew it out of the water with minimal effort. The highlight was Christian winning the vacant World Heavyweight Championship over Alberto Del Rio in a heart-stopping ladder match. Christian was aided by now-retired Edge in what was a touching swansong moment. Shame it was ruined two nights later on Smackdown.

Elsewhere, two WrestleMania rematches delivered when Rey Mysterio beat Cody Rhodes in an underrated falls count anywhere match, and Randy Orton toppled CM Punk in a last man standing match. John Cena regained the WWE Championship, beating The Miz and John Morrison in a three way cage match.

Afterward, in a moment famously captured on cell phone video, Cena broke the news to the crowd in Tampa that US President Barack Obama had just announced the death of Osama bin Laden.
