The first pay-per-view following WWE's Brand Extension was in some ways a mixed bag, but delivered heavily where it mattered most. The biggest story coming out of the show was 48-year-old Hulk Hogan's first WWE Championship win in nine years coming at the expense of Triple H's comeback saga. After Hogan stole the show at WrestleMania X8, it was necessary to cash in Hulkamania's second wave.

Elsewhere, the 'workrate' portion of the show was elevated by Kurt Angle's seesaw battle with Edge, Eddie Guerrero's Intercontinental title win over Rob Van Dam, and Tajiri capturing Billy Kidman's Cruiserweight title. The event is also notable for being Brock Lesnar's pay-per-view debut, in which he made quick work of ideal crash dummy opponent Jeff Hardy.
