Very few people can match The Undertaker for mystery and theatre. In 1996 Goldust was the polarising antithesis to the Dead Man. Put into a Casket Match with Goldust’s Intercontinental Championship on the line, the two delivered a concise and effective contest.

The promo that led up to the match, with Goldust flirting with a stoic ‘Taker, asking him if his cologne was “Embalming fluid No.5” and countless references to rigor mortis, is easily one of the strangest yet most entertaining things to go back and watch in retrospect.

The match itself was not as one-sided as you would expect, with Goldust allowed to take down the Dead Man on numerous occasions. After nearly ten minutes, Undertaker was able to hit the Tombstone Piledriver and drag Goldust towards the Golden Casket (naturally).

When the lid was lifted, it was revealed that Mankind had been hiding in the casket all along, waiting to drag the Undertaker inside and cost him the title.

On a show famously hampered by a severe thunderstorm knocking out the live feed, the contest remains a rare showdown between two larger than life stalwarts of modern wrestling.
