1. Ric Flair Vs. Terry Funk (World Title) - 1989
WWE.comFlair was usually booked as a heel in the NWA. Most of the time, he was the World Champion or feuding with the World Champion. He was the unquestioned top guy. After a phenomenal World Title win against Ricky Steamboat at Wrestlewar, he was challenged for World Title match by Terry Funk. Flair refused because Funk wasn't a top contender, so Funk ended up giving him a piledriver on a table. That was an insane move at that time because nobody did stuff like that. That move turned Flair babyface and it led to this match. What was so great about the match was how intense it was. Since Funk nearly ended Flair's career (in the story), a technical wrestling match wouldn't have worked. They needed to be really aggressive, so they were. Both guys bled, which isn't a shock considering who we're talking about. The spot where Funk nailed Flair with a Piledriver looked like it was going to end the match, but Flair managed to get his foot on the ropes. Flair kept on fighting back despite all the blood. It looked like such a physical brawl without using the kind of weapons that you would see in wrestling today. It was so different 25 years ago, but what they did worked so well. Just listen to the crowd. They bought into it. Flair ended up winning with an inside cradle, which was such a common finish in the NWA during this time period. They did it that way because Funk and the Great Muta attacked Flair after it was over. It was about telling another story even after Flair's win. They had a more famous I Quit match later in 1989, but their World Title match at the 1989 Bash was awesome too.
