In a break from convention, Hulk Hogan's face turn at WrestleMania X8 was entirely unplanned. He and The Rock were simply forced to flip the script mid-match after the Toronto crowd steadfastly refused to jeer the nWo leader.

Happily, this proved to be a great piece of improvisation. The interactive element turned what may merely have been a good match into a genuinely great one, up there in terms of drama with some of the best in the entire history of the event.

It even made sense for the overall character arc of Hogan, whose association with Kevin Nash and Scott Hall would reach its natural end the following night on Raw. It was as though the fans read the minds of the WWE writers.

In the squared circle, magical moments like these are incredibly rare. It's the kind of thing that, unless wrestling megastars become a thing again, we probably won't ever experience a second time. For that reason, it must go down as the greatest character shift WrestleMania has ever seen.
