TakeOver: New York's main event the first WWE match to ever break Dave Meltzer's star rating system in this week's Wrestling Observer Newsletter, scoring an outstanding *****½. Whether or not you put stock into the big man's scores is up to you: still, it's hard to argue that the final fall was anything but first-class, state-of-the-art pro-wrestling.

It's unfortunate, then, that the first fall was so dry. It was a nondescript good wrestling match between two outstanding performers, the likes of which you'd see on any episode of Raw or SmackDown or main roster pay-per-view. The second was marginally better, and the third outstanding. This makes it impossible for this writer to score Adam Cole vs. Johnny Gargano any higher, but those last ten minutes were impeccable, and Johnny Champion's overdue triumph felt like a huge moment.

That these were able to turn the crowd from their partisan pro-Cole stance to actively rooting for Johnny's triumph by the end speaks volumes of their skill. They laid out the perfect match for this specific victory, with every character beat and kicking out serving a coronation that'll be replayed on highlight packages for years to come.
