With the exodus of the luchadors to World Championship Wrestling, Paul Heyman and ECW responded with another masterstroke by bringing in numerous Japanese stars for showcase matches. One such bout was a 6-man tag at the very first ECW pay-per-view, Barely Legal, in 1997.

On one side was genuine legend The Great Sasuke, along with Gran Hamada and Masato Yukushiji. This trio went up against the Japanese arm of the Blue World Order, featuring Taka Michinoku, Dick Togo (a fantastic name) and Terry Boy.

This was 17 minutes of absolute professional wrestling madness. In many ways tradition is thrown out of the window, as bodies clog up the ring and moves are hit that audiences in the United States simply hadn't seen at this point. It was intense, it was frantic, it was stiff, and it was awesome.

The Great Sasuke's team came out on top, but it barely matters.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
