10 Best Modern WWE Rivalries
1. Johnny Gargano Vs. Tommaso Ciampa
The reason that these two stand above the rest is explained simply in that when you think of one, you think of the other. Trish Stratus will always remind you of Lita, Bret Hart will always compare to Shawn Michaels. That is the essence of a feud: two wrestlers who are so deeply connected that their careers are forever referenced within the shadow of one another.
When Ciampa attacked Gargano at NXT Takeover Chicago, everyone knew that this was going to be the feud that makes the two. They had proven to have unbelievable amount of chemistry as a team and thinking of them fighting each other was unimaginable. This is why the shock of the betrayal was filled with raw emotion. Most tag team break ups feel inevitable, but DIY had fans thinking the would be career partners. Their team meant something, and now it laid broken, and fans needed to know why.
The plethora of exchanges and matches that followed felt brutal and real. The performers implemented strong style wrestling and moves from a hardcore era that the WWE felt truly detached from. The fact that they were using weapons and techniques we rarely see proved how important winning was to them.
Like a lot of other entries, the dynamic between these two became muddled and confused after the peak of their feud. But at the height of their conflict, nothing was better.
