As 1999 progressed, things would only get better for Chyna. By now, she was one of the most popular stars under contract, and had turned into a genuine babyface fans enjoyed seeing succeed. The stage was set for her to capture her first ever singles title, and it'd be a big one.

It would have been easy for the WWF creative team to pen a quick Hardcore Title win at some point; that belt was passed around with reckless abandon, meaning little due to the throwaway nature of matches. The Intercontinental Title was something different, as it was the strap once deemed a gateway to the top of the card and subsequent World Title push.

Things may be a little different now, but being booked to win the Intercontinental Title was still a big thing in 1999. At No Mercy in October, Chyna defeated a departing Jeff Jarrett (who was heading for WCW) to capture the gold.

There was a monumental feel to the occasion; Chyna had set another first in becoming the only woman in history to hold such a prestigious championship.
