10 Best NJPW Matches Of 2016 (So Far...)

Chances are this will end 2016 as the most talked about match of the year in New Japan Pro Wrestling. It was day six of the Best of the Super Juniors, and NJPW returned to Tokyo's Korakuen Hall for a card headlined by the much anticipated battle between Ricochet and Will Ospreay.

What the Korakuen faithful got was something completely different to anything they would have encountered before. This was less a professional wrestling match and more a spectacle, two men showing just what the human form is capable of inside a professional wrestling ring.

Sure, it completely lacked psychology outside of one-upmanship, but does that always matter? We're watching a 'sport' where if you are thrown into the ropes you must always run back, so surely abandoning logic now and then in favour of sheer entertainment is allowed?

Because that is what this was. It was a true spectacle from start to finish, utterly unique in a more and more saturated identikit wrestling world. It was two high flyers showing that if you're making a list of high flyers in pro wrestling, you best have 'Will Ospreay' and 'Ricochet' near the top of that list.

Unless you're Vader of course.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
