It is hard to imagine that such a decorated competitor and consistent top guy such as Hirooki Goto has been so close to the IWGP Heavyweight Title without ever winning it. Sadly 2016 played out in much the same fashion for him as always.

Earning a title shot at WK10, Goto would lose to Okada soon after and would eventually take him up on his offer of joining the Chaos faction. Goto then wound up making it into the finals of the G1 Climax when Okada and Tanahashi fought to a draw on the final day of the block stage. Regardless of the circumstances, Goto went into the match with Kenny Omega and put on a career-defining performance. Oddly enough, the two would do the same thing only a few months later.

Goto and Ishii were the favourites to win the World Tag League but weren't so lucky. Goto has however managed to secure himself a singles match with Shibata at WK11 which should be a hard-hitting, emotional clash between the two former allies.
