The third ladder match to make it to the list was what many like to describe as the original Ladder Match. While that is obviously not entirely true, it was a historic match nonetheless. It was here HBK and Razor re-defined what we could expect to see in a WWE ring, popularising the then-novel concept in the process.

And the rivalry leading up to it was worth the carnage. Michaels had been stripped off the Intercontinental Title the year before. In kayfabe, the reason shown was that he didn’t defend the title often enough (lol Brock Lesnar). Subsequently, the Bad Guy would win the vacant title.

However, this is Shawn I-lay-down-for-nobody Michaels. Upon making his return, he still carried the old belt, calling himself the rightful IC champion. The stage was now set – two titles, both suspended above the ring: whoever used a ladder to retrieve them first would be declared the undisputed IC champion.

And then we got to witness an absolute classic, the first one involving metal rungs. There were all kinds of crazy spots that no one had done in WWE before. Slams off the top of ladders, catapulting your opponent into the steel and of course that ludicrous splash Michaels did off the top.
