10 Best Old School WWE Cage Matches
7. Hunter Hearst-Helmsley Vs. Mankind (SummerSlam 1997)
The steel cage had become less ubiquitous on WWF programming during the '90s, but as the company started to head towards a more mature, violent presentation in 1997, the time was ripe to bring back the big blue bars to settle disputes once again.
It made sense to house this match within the confines of the cage, as Mankind and Hunter Hearst-Helmsley had spent the entirety of the previous month's Canadian Stampede pay-per-view brawling around the arena. As Chyna was also in Helmsley's corner by this point, the stipulation was a no-brainer.
The energetic match gave an indication from both men that they were two of the new stars around which the WWF could build their comeback against WCW. Extra interest was added by Chyna's constant attempts at interference through the bars. The highlight of the match was Mankind paying homage to 'Superfly' Jimmy Snuka, whose leap from the top of the old mesh cage at Madison Square Garden had inspired a young Mick Foley to become a wrestler. Although his flying elbow drop from 15-feet high was not performed with the same grace as Snuka's splash, it meant the match would not soon be forgotten.
