Rude and Heenan were charged with repeating their performances in order to get new WWF Champion The Ultimate Warrior over on his first pay-per-view defence. Rude had prepared the Great Neon Hope for his title run with their Intercontinental title feud the previous year. Much like in those matches, Rude spent most of this SummerSlam main event being thrown around the ring with little care for his own safety, except this time with the added impact of the steel bars.

Although the match ultimately felt a little short, lacking in drama and atmosphere, indicating that Warrior wasn't working out on top of the card, the heels did their best to recreate the Hogan-style cage magic. This even extended to 'The Brain' taking his customary post-match beating, and Rude's rude bits making a reappearance. It was enjoyable, but without Hogan working the crowd so well, and blood being completely off the menu, the cage match was losing its appeal.
