10 Best Old School WWE Cage Matches
4. 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper Vs. 'Ravishing' Rick Rude (Madison Square Garden, 1989)
Occasionally feuds that didn't feature wrestlers who sported a skullet would reach the level of intensity that made it necessary to enter the 15-foot-high cage. The 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper and 'Ravishing' Rick Rude conflict of late 1989 was one of these, and the two tore the house down at Madison Square Garden.
Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan was the unsung star of many of Hulk Hogan's cage matches in the '80s, and he excelled here by doing his best to help out Rude and frustrate Piper's attempts at escape. 'The Ravishing One' and 'Hot Rod' recreated the Hogan-Orndorff non-finish spot at one point, but added their own spin with excessive bottom-flashing on Rude's part. In fact, for most of the match Rude's buttocks are blurred out, having had his tights pulled down by Piper and never finding the time to hoist them up. Aside from this odd visual, it was one of Piper's more energetic performances of the era and Rude bumped around the ring manically. 'The Rowdy One' eventually overcame the odds and sent the New York crowd home happy, and gave a much needed rest to the TV guy who had been in charge of blurring out Rude's rude bits.
