Bash at the Beach 2000 was supposed to be a big night for World Championship Wrestling. According to Hulk Hogan, he was due to begin an angle where he would leave the company, only to return at a later date. That would end up not being the case, as after Jeff Jarrett laid down in the middle of the ring and Hogan won the WCW Heavyweight Championship, the Hulkster would leave the arena, never to be seen in the company again.

When Vince Russo came to the ring following Hogan's exit, the storyline ended up weaving into real issues. Vince Russo brought out the big guns, saying that Hulk did not care about the company, or anyone in it besides himself. Russo told the crowd that Hogan had gotten his wish, playing his creative control card in order to win the WCW Heavyweight Championship, before saying Hogan would never be back in WCW

Russo then voided Hogan's win, giving the WCW Heavyweight Championship back to Jeff Jarrett and made a match between Double J and Booker T for later that night.

By all accounts, the Russo/Hogan exchange was pre-planned ahead of time, but Hulk took umbrage with how far Vinny Ru went with his comments.
