WWE: 10 Best Pre-Match Promos Ever

1. Shawn Michaels Vs Triple H At Summerslam 2002

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7thUp8uTm18 The promo starts off with images of Michaels and Triple H in the old DX days, cavorting about to lighthearted music while J.R. recounts how close they are. That drastically changes when Triple H turns on Michaels, the music and lighting becoming something darker and more disturbed, which we now realise Triple H is. The DX days are long ago, and The Game is now ruthless and selfish. When it becomes apparent that he attacked Shawn backstage as well, he launches into a tirade against Michaels, calling him weak and vulnerable. And when Shawn lays down the challenge, the audience is baited and hooked. This video has numerous strong points, including a brilliant song by WWE's own Jim Johnston, but what really sells it is it's structure from then. The impacts match the music, the wrestler's actions coincide with the lyrics, it all becomes one seamless message. What makes it better is the doubt it raises over Shawn's physical capability. Fans hadn't seen Shawn Michaels in a match in four years, and in hyping the match up, all we see Shawn of the present doing is throwing punches and one awkward looking dive, whereas in the old footage, we see the athleticism of the old HBK in years past. The instrumental section is the best of the whole video, as we see old footage of HBK with J.R.'s narration, followed by Triple H screaming that Shawn can no longer wrestle. The shot of a bloody Michaels in black and white while The Game cries "HBK is dead!" looms in our heads, and we honestly don't know if Shawn can do this. But damn, do we want to see him try. So there we are, 10 of the best pre-match promos in WWE history. What are your favourites? Let me know in the comments!
