9. The Rock Becomes The Nation's Leader

Upon his debut in late-1996, Rocky Maivia was everything that was holding the WWF back from appealing to a new generation. Goofy and plain, Rocky was ill-fitting for the mid-to-late-90's, and something had to change if fans were ever going to accept him as anything other than a lower-card babyface.

Morphing into the character of The Rock, Maivia was a revelation as a smooth-talking arrogant heel, joining The Nation Of Domination. Quickly, it became clear that The Rock was becoming the focal point of the group, and after defending the Intercontinental Title at WrestleMania 14 against Ken Shamrock, the man would become the leader of The Nation on Raw.

Ex-communicating the previous leader, Faarooq, The Nation became more relevant with The Rock as the centrepiece, and 'The Great One' took another step in the right direction, getting ever closer to the top of the card. Being the leader of such an established faction gave The Rock the chance to develop even further, and it wouldn't be long until he was one of the top names in the federation.
