The year-and-a-half-long sporting rivalry between Cody Rhodes and Darby Allin was an impressive storytelling feat from AEW. Allin's first match in the company was against Cody at Fyter Fest 2019, where he surprisingly went to a time-limit draw with the Executive Vice President. The result not only established the time limit as a valid ending to a match in AEW when used sparingly, but also showed the promotion's early investment in Darby.

The pair would go on to face each other twice more on Dynamite, which Rhodes won in decreasingly convincing fashion as Darby grew closer to besting his rival. The stage was set for the two once more when they faced off for the TNT Championship at Full Gear 2020.

Darby Allin would go on to defeat the 'American Nightmare' in his fourth attempt, which paid off the investment that AEW showed in the feud since one of its earliest shows. Darby became the first of the 'Four Pillars' to win a major championship and would go on to have a very good title reign. Despite some criticism Cody received for burying people during his time in AEW, it was results like these that showed how valuable wins over him were.
