The long running feud between Stone Cold Steve Austin and Vince McMahon had captured the imaginations of audiences everywhere. Austin’s gutsy rebellions against his obnoxious boss mirrored the daydreams many of us have had in our own jobs. After years of butting heads, the notion of Austin making peace and siding up with his nemesis was unthinkable. Headlining WrestleMania X-Seven in his home state of Texas, Austin allied with McMahon to ensure a title victory over The Rock.

Austin displayed a more villainous side to his offence throughout the match, ultimately clobbering The Rock unconscious with a steel chair on the orders of McMahon. The raucously pro-Austin crowd were shocked, a polarised reaction filling the Astrodome.

Austin and McMahon shook hands and drank some Steveweisers before Austin smashed Rock with a title belt cheap shot. Austin’s heel turn marked the end of the Attitude Era and sadly, the beginning of the end for the company’s boom period at the time. As entertaining as Austin was in the heel role, many fans switched off. Despite the high quality of Austin’s matches and promos, audiences had little interest in watching him as a company stooge.

Regardless of the aftermath, WrestleMania X-Seven remains the best and most talked about of Austin and Rock’s Mania trilogy.
