Though Smackdown originally got the World Tag Team Titles in the original WWE draft, they were poached by Raw later in the summer. That left Smackdown without a set of titles, so GM Stephanie McMahon created her own. The new WWE Tag Team Titles would be decided in an eight-team tournament.

The tournament gave birth to a new era for the show, one where the "Smackdown Six" put on great matches each and every week. Still, the best WWE Tag Title match was the very first one, when the teams of Chris Benoit and Kurt Angle and Rey Mysterio and Edge met in the tournament finals at No Mercy.

Though Benoit and Angle were hated enemies, they managed to put their differences aside long enough to present a major obstacle to Edge and Mysterio. After more than 20 minutes of dazzling attacks and incredible reversals, Angle tried to get the Ankle Lock on Edge, but Edge reversed it into one of his own. Angle looked to be in trouble, but he managed to get his own Ankle Lock back, forcing Edge to submit.
