The 2002 brand split originally did away with the Intercontinental title, but it wasn't long before it was brought back to Raw, and shortly after that the US Title was added on the Smackdown roster. There was also the Cruiserweight title unique to Smackdown.

By having these secondary titles on separate shows, they possessed greater meaning. As such, props like the US Title ended up being important in the early career development of John Cena. It meant more back then when it was a brand exclusive, and Cena's 2004 - 2005 reign gave him the momentum to move towards the WWE Championship.

With the latest brand split, it seems likely that the US and IC titles will again be on separate brands. This could be the start of some prestige being restored to the secondary belts.
