The current "divas revolution" which has brought about the Women's Division is nothing new. Way back in 2003, the divas were athletically focused and contested some fine matches for the Women's Championship. Part of what allowed that was the 2002 brand split, with Raw getting a competitive female division and Smackdown getting the more entertainment-orientated ladies.

This worked very well, and resulted in some of the best women's matches in company history. Competitors like Trish Stratus and Victoria were having excellent matches, and to be fair, even the Smackdown divas had some good bouts.

The separation of brands allowed Raw's Women's Championship to become a bigger deal, as it was one of the unique attractions of the brand. Women like Trish Stratus flourished. The same could happen in 2016, with the division becoming a focus on one of the brands, and the champion being a masthead. As for the Total Divas style wrestlers, they can gain a place on the opposite brand, fulfilling an entertainment role.
