10 Best Tournament Finals In WWE History
1. Owen Hart Vs. Davey Boy Smith, European Championship Tournament
In 1997, WWE decided to add a third singles titles to their list of championships: the European Title. Designed as a belt that would represent the company's growing market in Europe, it was up for grabs in another eight-man tournament - one with an incredible assortment of talent. Held over a series of shows in Germany, the tournament came down to a match on Raw pitting "The British Bulldog" Davey Boy Smith against Owen Hart.
Smith and Hart were actually the reigning World Tag Team Champions, though they couldn't get along and were often at each other's throats. The fact that they met in the finals of the European Title tournament simply gave them an excuse to beat up on each other, but it turned into one of the best matches in Raw history.
Both men were heels, but as Smith had the home continent advantage, he worked as a babyface. That meant that Owen was free to bend the rules, aggravating his partner with punches and eye rakes thrown in amidst wrestling holds. The athleticism never wavered, though, and when Smith managed to counter a roll-up into a pinfall win, the fans were elated. As for Owen, he put his hard feelings aside and raised his partner's hand.
