2. WCW Mayhem
Before EA butchered the WCW license with the aforementioned Backstage Assault (still surely one of the worst names ever!?), the company hit the proverbial out of the park with WCW Mayhem. Released in 1999 for Playstation and N64, the title would even later see release on the Nintendo Gameboy Color, even if that was obviously a more stripped down version. Videogames based on the WWF at the time favoured complex button sequences to pull off even the most basic of moves, which made playing a frustrating case of pausing every so often to look at the command list menu. Mayhem simplified the nuances of a wrestling match nicely, favouring a system which had players only having to hold one of the face buttons and a direction in order to pull off something visually appealing, like a Powerbomb or Suplex. EA would take the idea of fighting in backstage areas to the extreme later, but the concept works well here. Being able to compete as Sting, taking on Hollywood Hogan at Starrcade, and chasing the evil nWo member to the back, before bashing him with a chair in the boiler room, is still fun to this day. There's a clear emphasis on presentation, style over substance if you will, with Mayhem. The gameplay itself is still fun, but presentation takes centre stage, such as the truly excellent commentary from Tony Schiavone and Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan.
