It's the ultimate irony that Chris Jericho would have to wait until he was a World Wrestling Federation employee to capture the WCW World Title. The Rock had defeated Booker T at Summerslam, and defended his belt against Booker once more at Unforgiven, so Jericho was given a crack at the gold in time for the No Mercy PPV. Constructing a match many had theorised would happen after Y2J debuted and interrupted The Rock in August, 1999, both men gave their all, and Rocky put Jericho over in a match which arguably stole the show on what was a really good Pay-Per-View event. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xz5oko_the-rock-vs-chris-jericho-no-mercy-2001-wcw-championship_sport Admittedly, Jericho was helped by interference from Stephanie McMahon, who helped distract The Rock, but nothing could take away from the fact Y2J was now WCW Champion. There's absolutely no doubt about it, the original WCW creative team did not see Chris Jericho as a viable champ, but they'd prove to be wrong.
