The events following this match have obviously complicated matters, but there’s no denying the sheer outpouring of raw emotion that Chris Benoit’s World Heavyweight Title win at WrestleMania XX provoked.

Benoit had been regarded as one of WWE’s most held-back performers for years. As “the best damn technical wrestler in WWE,” Benoit had built-up a huge groundswell of support through his outstanding in-ring work, and regular great matches with the likes of Kurt Angle and Chris Jericho.

By the time he won the 2004 Royal Rumble, Benoit was one of the biggest faces in the business, and he’d done it the old-fashioned way.

At WrestleMania, Benoit faced-off with Shawn Michaels and Triple H, the World Heavyweight Champion. With the Madison Square Garden crowd buzzing, the trio put on a fantastic match full of momentum-shifts and big moments. Finally, Benoit was able to seize Triple H in the Crippler Crossface, and four years after debuting in the company, Benoit was on top of the world.

The crowd went nuts, and Benoit just couldn’t hold the tears back. After years and years playing the also-ran, he was World Heavyweight Champion, and living his dream at the top of the wrestling mountain. His old friend Eddie Guerrero joined him in the ring moments later, and with confetti raining down, it was a beautiful moment.
