Though WWE had a clear-cut advantage in the Monday Night Wars by the end of 1998, that didn't make the battle any less bitter or the stakes any less important. WWE was still hotshotting angles in order to draw huge numbers, and WCW was still doing anything they could to chip away at the gulf.

On the very first Monday of 1999, WCW announcer Tony Schiavone spoiled the results of Raw, which had been taped six days earlier. In a match that was set to air later in the evening, Mankind defeated The Rock to finally claim the WWE World Championship. Though Schiavone (at Eric Bischoff's behest) revealed the results and attempted to belittle Mick Foley, the tactic had the opposite effect, as many fans switched from Nitro to Raw to see the beloved Foley achieve immortality.

On Raw, Triple H helped Foley earn a shot at The Rock, leading to a very heated main event and a dramatic win by Mankind. Though everybody knew it was coming, it was no less inspirational to see the most beloved underdog of the era celebrate his huge win atop the shoulders of DX, then dedicate his victory to his children.
