John Cena was garnering controversial reactions even as far back as his second WWE Championship reign, which explains the mixed response greeting him as he faced off against Triple H in the main even of WrestleMania 22. After trading extravagant entrances (Cena's now infamously featuring CM Punk as a low-key extra) the pair went on to put on a tremendous match, featuring arguably the first duelling "yay/boo" chant in 'Mania history. Of course, the boos were largely for the polarising champ himself. Eventually, the crowd responded in stunned silence as the Game tapped out clean in the middle of the ring, putting the champion over huge and making him seem a genuine star. Although Cena's eventual submission victory was hardly the most universally popular outcome, it went a long way to cementing him as the all-time great he has become. As mentioned previously, he was only in the midst of his second title reign, making this match a key prelude to his following decade of superstardom. The debate still rages on over the positive and negative impacts Cena has had on the wrestling industry, but he and Triple H undoubtedly put on one of the great WrestleMania closers of all time.
