Kenny Omega's transition to New Japan's heavyweight ranks in early 2016 saw him embark on an iconoclastic quest to change the company. He immediately made an impact by defeating NJPW ace Hiroshi Tanahashi to win the vacant IWGP Intercontinental Title.

The feud continued, and Omega looked to Americanize it by challenging Tanahashi to the first-ever ladder match in New Japan history. Tanahashi accepted, and it looked like a classic was brewing - but before the match could take place, "The High-Flying Star" was put out of action with a shoulder injury. Tanahashi's tag team partner (and former ROH World Champion) Michael Elgin would have to take his place.

Like most American ladder matches, the bout was brutal. Like most Bullet Club matches, it was full of interference. Like most New Japan title fights, it was fantastic. Elgin destroyed Omega, powerbombing him onto (but not through) a table, but The Young Bucks, Adam Page, and Yujiro Takahashi ran in and handcuffed the challenger to the ropes. It was Matt Sydal and Ricochet who ran off the interlopers, allowing Elgin to break the cuffs, throw Omega out of the ring, and grab the Intercontinental Championship.
