The feud between Chris Jericho and Shawn Michaels started off with a bang and ultimately became one of the best WWE programs of the past ten years. When Y2J ambushed Michaels on The Highlight Reel and slammed his head into the Jeritron 6000, it marked his transition to a serious, frightening heel, and unbridled success followed.

The feud with Michaels continued, with the two men trading PPV victories in brutal contests and Jericho repeatedly attacking HBK's eye in an attempt to force him into retirement. At Unforgiven 2008, Michaels defeated Jericho, but later in the show, the opportunist joined the World Heavyweight Championship scramble and came away with the title.

That set the stage for a title match between Jericho and Michaels, which took place in the main event of 2008's No Mercy PPV. That bout, more intense than outright brutal, saw Jericho work Michaels's arm over and rely on interference from Lance Cade, but eventually, both men scaled the ladder at once and tried to grab the belt. A headbutt from Jericho felled Michaels, and the champion was able to take the title.
