10 Best Wrestling Matches Of The Week (Aug 7)

4. Hiroshi Tanahashi Vs. Tomohiro Ishii (NJPW G1 Climax, 3 August)

Tommaso Ciampa Johnny Gargano

It is a testament to the talent of Hiroshi Tanahashi that even though his comeback story in this year's G1 Climax is the most predictable thing possible, it is still a story that all are completely enthralled by. From the moment Tanahashi lost to Tama Tonga it was clear that he was going to subsequently run through his next opponents, but the matches have still be more than fine.

Actually, no, wait, maybe it is a testament to the talents of Tomohiro Ishii that no matter how unlikely it is that he will pull off big wins these days, the Stone Pitbull still drags you into his matches by sheer will of fighting spirit. Ishii is as good a babyface as there is in wrestling, and even though he is basically eliminated after this loss, he's still a threat.

So combine those two and you are guaranteed to get something special. This wasn't as good as their G1 Climax bout way back in 2014, but it was still a lot better than most wrestling this week. Tanahashi won with the High Fly Flow, and the comeback continues. Ishii has a match with Okada up next, which you can pretty much guarantee will be in this list next week.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
