If Ring of Honor is pushing the parameters of how this article defines 'best match of the week,' then NJPW really is stretching them. This matchup came from the 2014 G1 Climax Tournament, which received high critical acclaim.

The story of this matchup is that Shibata has been absent from wrestling for 10 years. He broke into the business about the same time as Nakamura and the two have wrestled in their early days. This match in the tournament is their first meeting in a decade.

Lots of aggression was on display here which was highlighted by many stiff forearm shots and a sleeper hold that Shibata used to drag Nakamura very ungracefully to the outside. Shibata won after a combination of the Go To Sleep and then a Penalty Kick.

Should New Japan be considered in future editions of this article? There are plenty of promotions that tape their shows in advance or use past event footage for their weekly programming, but this might be too much of a stretch. Comment below if you feel strongly either way. As of now, the company will continue to be considered for this article series.
