Even though Tomohiro Ishii spent most of 2015 feuding with Togi Makabe over the NEVER Openweight Championship, Tomoaki Honma emerged as Ishii's best rival. When Makabe couldn't make a scheduled title defense at The New Beginning due to the flu, he vacated the belt and Honma battled Ishii for it. The two men had a brutal brawl that saw Ishii emerge victorious.

They'd cross paths again in the G1 Climax tournament, with perpetual underdog Honma picking up his sole win at Ishii's expense. That set up a blowoff match between the two men at November's Power Struggle show, and as Ishii was once again NEVER Openweight Champion, the belt was on the line.

For the final match, the crowd was electric. Honma has long been one of the favorites of the New Japan faithful, with his offensive repertoire playing perfectly into his underdog character. Ishii - who similarly rose to popularity based on a swell of fan support - wasn't about to let his title go without a fight, though, and the match that followed was the most insane of the feud. After lariats, headbutts, and all manner of brutality, Ishii was once again victorious.
