Coming at the end of one of the most critically acclaimed wrestling matches ever, on one of the most critically acclaimed wrestling pay-per-views ever, this cliffhanger signalled the end of WWE's last true boom period.

Steve Austin vs. The Rock is an all-timer. A tough, physical battle between the Attitude Era's two leading lights, it's a relentless 30-minute war completely lacking in lulls. Two world-class performances from two world-class performers took the story of 'Stone Cold' needing to beat 'The Great One' to a different level, with Austin's escalation in aggression and viciousness as well sold by Rocky as they were executed by his challenger.

It finished with the unthinkable, as Austin's desperation saw him make the most shocking move of his career. His greatest rival, Vince McMahon trod down to the ring. Confusion reigned as the Chairman pulled Rock off 'Stone Cold' for a pinfall. Their cooperation continued until the sobering conclusion when Austin took McMahon's chair and battered The Rock close to 20 times, scoring himself the 1-2-3 and the WWE Championship.

The post-match handshake blew the wrestling world apart. The Texan rebel had sold his soul for gold, and while Austin's turn ultimately flopped, it was incredible in the moment.
