4. Nick Patrick

The greatest heel referee of all time?

I'm not even sure if that is a debate, but for a short while in the mid-to-late 1990s Nick Patrick was getting serious heat in WCW. Patrick grew up wanting to be a wrestler, but injury ended his dream and he became a referee in order to stay involved.

He was the most recognisable referee in WCW and even became the nWo's official ref, although this came to an end when Patrick became concerned for the safety of Rick Steiner of all people. Nick Patrick would go on to join WWF when WCW closed, and stayed with the company all the way to his release in 2008.

In many ways, Nick Patrick was the Earl Hebner of WCW, and their rivalry during the botched Invasion angle may have made more sense than most of the other feuds at the time.

He was also responsible for possible the greatest referee sell in the history of WCW. Just look at this thing of beauty...

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
