The Superpowers (Dusty Rhodes and Nikita Koloff) and The Road Warriors weren't exactly a stable. They were more like two tag teams thrown together. But those four as a unit were the only ones who could stop the Four Horsemen.

Dusty was the main target of the Horsemen, as they had the audacity to break his arm with a baseball bat and film it. To get his revenge, he joined up with longtime mega heel Koloff to form the United States/Russian takeoff of The Superpowers. That wasn't enough, though. The Road Warriors were fighting their own battle against Flair's group, and the only way to settle things was to join forces and dish out some punishment inside of the War Games match.

Rhodes, who was also booker at the time, came up with the idea for War Gagmes for the sole purpose of this feud, thus creating one of the best gimmick matches in the history of the business.

At the 1987 Great American Bash, it was a five-on-five showdown (managers J.J. Dillion and Paul Ellering also got in on the fun), and they beat the hell out of each other for 22 minutes before the heroes came out on top.

The two sides faced off in subsequent non-televised re-matches around the country, and on major televised shows in various forms, creating some of the all-time hottest bouts ever seen in Jim Crockett Promotions.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
