On Christmas Day 1982, in a match with Kerry Von Erich against Ric Flair, special guest referee Michael Hayes fired the first shots in the legendary war against the Von Erich clan.

As Terry Gordy slammed a cage door on Kerry's head, The Fabulous Freebirds likely didn’t know they'd just incited a five year war, otherwise they may have reconsidered.

While many stable battles have been great additions to a wrestling card, the Von Erichs vs. The Freebirds lit WCCW on fire, giving them a huge feud that raked in a ton of money, solidified the family as the greatest heroes around, and lead to one incredible story.

Real-life tragedies cut the lengthy feud short, otherwise due to the extreme heat (and money) the angle generated it, they might still be rolling on to this day.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
