Kevin Owens was the reigning NXT Champion when he debuted on Raw, attacking John Cena and making one hell of a statement. Many fans believed that Owens could be WWE's next top heel, and he added fuel to that fire when, at Elimination Chamber 2015, he cleanly beat Cena in a classic match. That same evening, though, a rematch was signed between the NXT Champion and the United States Champion, and again, neither title would be on the line.

A mere two weeks later, Owens and Cena met at Money in the Bank. This time, much to the chagrin of the fans who had hoped WWE was breaking its booking pattern, Cena scored the victory, setting his war with Owens at 1-1. Again, the match was an excellent affair that saw Owens show off his skills in front of a huge audience and Cena prove for the umpteenth time that he could hang with anyone in the sport, and again, another match would be necessary.

The third bout took place at the Battleground PPV, with John Cena's U.S. Title on the line. This match, the longest of the three, saw both men fight desperately to win the war, but in the end, Cena was successful - he locked Owens in the STF and forced the challenger to submit.

The series ultimately drew some criticism for being repetitive (there were similarities between the three matches) and failing to put Owens over as a star, but the bouts themselves were all excellent and the feud was one of the best of 2015.
