From an unheralded classic to a match featuring arguably the two most-written about performers of the same era. Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock were fresh off their first WrestleMania battle and the beef continued into IYH: Backlash, this time with Shane McMahon acting as the special referee.

Shane had recently taken over from papa Vince as the key man in the Corporation, and once again the odds were stacked up high against the Texas Rattlesnake here. The odds were compounded by the rule that if Austin touched Shane, the title would change hands.

In a lot of ways this was as Attitude Era as it got. There wasn't much in the way of 'wrestling' here, with the action seeming much more like a fight than an exhibition fo technical ability. This was a brawl with a whole lot of punches, plunder and not much else. Those looking for arm drags should look elsewhere.

It also happens to be a whole tonne of fun, with all the McMahon shenanigans (McMahonigans, although however hard I try that isn't catching on) one expected from this era. The finish comes when Vince (of all people) turns face to help Austin, with everyone's favourite referee Earl Hebner counting the three

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
