10 Best WWE Championship Reigns Of The 1990s
1. Stone Cold Steve Austin (March-June 1998)
When you look at what Steve Austin actually did in his first WWE Championship reign, you'd be forgiven for being a little underwhelmed.
Following his win over Shawn Michaels at Mania XIV, he had two pay-per-view defences against Mick Foley, one on a UK-exclusive show against Triple H, and then lost the belt to Kane after just 91 days. But this reign is about so much more than the matches and the numbers.
This was the reign that truly solidified Stone Cold as an all-timer. He went from being a white-hot contender to an insanely popular top dog, never dropping any of the momentum he had gained whilst chasing the belt.
Him winning the belt was a sign that the Attitude Era had fully arrived, and that WWE would never be the same again. Also, with the power of hindsight, it was also the beginning of the end for WCW and the Monday Night Wars.
And it's not like the matches were bad either! Those two Foley matches from Unforgiven and Over the Edge are particularly tasty.
Historic, thrilling, and so damned important, this reign definitely deserves a Hell Yeah.
