This match had a rather emotional back story to it. Alberto Del Rio and Christian competed in a ladder match in 2011, looking to grab a World Heavyweight Championship which had been relinquished by Christian's best friend Edge in the weeks prior. Edge was forced to retire from in-ring competition and walked away as champion, but given Del Rio was already in the title picture, he was due another opportunity. Christian worked his way into an opportunity by winning a 20-man battle royal on SmackDown in the weeks prior to the event. The match was well put together, had plenty of high spots and its share of drama. As Michael Cole edged Del Rio to climb the ladder and grab his 'destiny' with his hands, the Rated 'R' Superstar appeared by the stage blaring a horn from a jeep - allowing Christian to throw Del Rio out of the ring, climb the ladder himself and retrieve the belt. Edge's eyes filled up as Christian began the celebrations. Magic.
