10 Best WWE Gimmicks Of 2014

2. Sami Zayn - The Loveable Underdog

There are very few gimmicks that hit home like the loveable underdog. Everybody loves it when a down on their luck hero rises up and makes something of himself, whether it be in film, TV, or literature. In wrestling it is no different and the WWE told a perfect loveable underdog story in 2014 on NXT. For most of the year, Sami Zayn had come up short in big matches, whether he was facing Cesaro, Tyler Breeze, Titus O€™Neil, or Adrian Neville. As 2014 came to a close, NXT€™s most beloved superstar had been peppered with questions of whether he could actually win the big one, and embarked on a redemption tour en route to finally capturing the NXT Title that had eluded him. He beat all the guys who had beat him throughout the year, and capped it all off by having one of the best WWE matches all year with Adrain Neville at NXT R Evolution. Sami Zayn was the perfect underdog. He fought to his dying breath every time he competed, he did amazing things in the ring, was respectful of and respected by his peers and the audience, and had a goal that he absolutely needed to achieve by the year's end. All those things made him undeniably affable; you simply wanted to see the guy succeed because of all the work he put in and how much he deserved it. Humans love a good underdog story, and Sami Zayn was 2014€™s most complete underdog story. He went from down on his luck, to the top of NXT in the course of a calander year.
