10 Best WWE Gimmicks Of 2017

7. The Usos

2017 belongs to the Usos. Much of that has to do with the full embrace of their heel characters.

Legitimised as badasses with their cheeky transgression of company policy at the expense of Xavier Woods, the Usos, galvanised by the full acceptance of the crowd, continued to carve out their new personas with spittle-spewing conviction. Their promo work was sensational at times - searingly confident blast beats spat by two men with unshakeable belief in themselves. This belief transmitted to the audience, who received them as the consensus best tag team of the year in what was an unusually crowded field. Cage is probably a more appropriate word; the Usos were so brilliant that they put everybody else on lock.

Their in-ring game was even better. Perfecting the great artifice of heel tag work, the Usos redefined seamless chemistry. New Japan Pro Wrestling outfought WWE in most every conceivable area of WWE in 2017 - with the notable exception of tag wrestling. Jimmy and Jey taught G.O.D. et al. a lesson in crafting innovation from rote familiarity.

In a continuation of the theme, the Usos developed this confidence on the sadly-shelved Talking Smack.

The Usos are what wrestling should be - an extension of their brilliant selves, brilliantly manifested on the TV screen.
