Just over a decade before the SummerSlam 2008 show-closer, 'Hell In A Cell' was as much a term to describe Shawn Michaels' personal torture as it was a revelation of a stipulation that would redefine WWE's biggest possible payoff.

On the night, Shawn escaped the slaughter with a win (more on that later) in spite of the horrific punishment he suffered. Edge would experience many of the hardships 'HBK' sustained, but lacked a 'Big Red Machine' to literally get him out of jail.

Like Michaels, Edge had the beating coming, but unlike the 'The Showstopper', the 'Rated-R Superstar' had few friends willing to save him from The Undertaker's wrath. Following a WrestleMania 24 World Title show-closer that didn't go his way, Edge had waged an campaign of abuse against the iconic star, utilising his 'Rated R-My' to help run his rival out of WWE altogether following a brutal June TLC main event.

Gradually though, Edge alienated everybody that had helped him cling to his beloved prize. Nefarious deeds with Alicia Fox that severed a power-hungry double act with Vickie Guerrero, leaving Edge all alone to take suffer his long-overdue consequences.

Taking each of the moves and finishers he'd inflicted upon 'The Deadman' (including the camera shot and con-chair-to that started it all) as well the usual Chokeslam/Tombstone repartee in a thrilling final stretch, Edge's comprehensive kicking was a fitting payoff to memorable conflict.
