3. Stone Cold Steve Austin Vs Chris Benoit - Smackdown, May 31st 2001 (Edmonton)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpySlITNP4g The May 31st 2001 Smackdown clash between Stone Cold Steve Austin and Chris Benoit was a rematch from a classic contest at Raw just a few days earlier. However, the Smackdown battle was that much better, easily the best match of Steve Austin's ill conceived 2001 heel run. Like all great wrestling matches, the story was fundamental to the enjoyability. You had the hometown hero in Benoit, back in Edmonton with a chance of winning the WWF title. Then you had the American Austin who was in corrupt cahoots with Vince McMahon, fans were desperate to see Benoit win the title that night. It was a really good technical battle, exactly what you would expect from two of the finest workers of the last twenty years. There was brawling, suplexes, submissions and of course some screwyness, all culminating in an edge of the seat drama. For a moment it looked as if Benoit might actually do the unthinkable and become champion, but of course Steve Austin won out in the end, grabbing the tights for a roll up.
